On Monday, February 6, 2023, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake shook the Turkish city of Gaziantep in the early morning. A striking statistic of 2,100 aftershocks added to the gruesome scenes of smoke and rubble cover the once vibrant and lively city as rescue forces battle with the clock to save citizens trapped under the rubble. With a rising death toll of over 42,310 people, the Turkish government has declared a level 4 state of emergency, calling for international aid and assistance. However, experts fear that orphaned children, loss of housing, and major structural damage have stretched the country’s financial and economic power to its limit. According to Turkey’s Defense Minister, over 20,000 Syrians who immigrated to Turkey returned to their homeland after the natural disaster.
